There is something about the first hint of autumn that makes us want to change our nails.
The bright summer shades start disappearing.
The wardrobe gets darker.
The textures get heavier.
And suddenly, the colour you've worn happily throughout July doesn't quite feel the same anymore.
Autumn 2026 is bringing back some familiar favourites — chocolate, burgundy and deep cherry aren't going anywhere — but this season feels slightly different.
The colours are richer.
The finishes are more interesting.
And even the simplest manicure is becoming a little moodier.
Here are the shades we're taking into the new season.
Espresso Is Becoming the New Nude
Brown has been building momentum for several seasons, but this autumn it isn't simply another trend.
It's becoming a neutral.
Think rich espresso, dark chocolate, coffee and softer cocoa shades.
They have the depth of a dark manicure without the severity of black, which makes brown surprisingly easy to wear.
On short, beautifully manicured nails, a glossy espresso can look incredibly expensive.
On longer nails, chocolate becomes slightly more dramatic.
And for clients who normally live in nude, it's probably one of the easiest ways to move into autumn without feeling completely outside their comfort zone.
Burgundy Never Really Left
Some colours don't need reinventing.
Burgundy is one of them.
Deep wine shades return almost every autumn because they simply work.
They're sophisticated without being boring, dark without necessarily feeling harsh, and they complement the heavier colours we naturally begin wearing as the weather changes.
This year, we'd look beyond traditional red and move towards deeper wine, oxblood and plum-toned burgundies.
The darker, the better.
Black Cherry Is Having Another Moment
Somewhere between red, purple and almost-black sits one of autumn's best nail colours.
Black cherry.
In normal lighting it can appear incredibly deep.
Then the red and plum undertones reveal themselves as the light hits.
It's one of those colours that doesn't need nail art to make an impact.
A beautifully shaped nail, precise cuticle work and a high-gloss black cherry finish can do enough on its own.
Sometimes the colour is the design.
Olive Is the Unexpected Neutral
Green isn't always the first colour clients reach for.
But olive is different.
Muted olive, moss and khaki tones work particularly well alongside the colours we already associate with autumn — camel, denim, chocolate, cream and burgundy.
It has enough personality to feel different without becoming difficult to wear.
For someone who wants to move away from the usual reds and browns this season, olive might be the one.
Denim Is Coming to Our Nails
This is probably one of the more unexpected colours we're watching.
Mid-wash blue.
Not navy.
Not pastel.
Think your favourite pair of jeans.
Blue became a major colour story through summer, but the more muted denim version makes it surprisingly easy to carry into September.
Paired with short nails and a glossy finish, it feels clean and modern rather than overly bright.
It's also proof that an autumn manicure doesn't automatically have to be brown, red or black.
Metallics Are Getting Warmer
Chrome isn't disappearing.
It's evolving.
Instead of the very bright, futuristic silver chrome we've seen everywhere, autumn is moving towards warmer and moodier metallic finishes.
Antique gold.
Bronze.
Pewter.
Gunmetal.
Copper.
And you don't necessarily need an entire chrome manicure.
A metallic French tip, subtle detail or sheer wash over another autumn colour can completely change the finish without overpowering the nail.
Chocolate + Chrome Might Be the Combination of the Season
If plain chocolate feels a little too safe, add chrome.
The combination of a rich brown base with a metallic finish takes a classic autumn shade somewhere completely different.
It's warm.
Reflective.
A little unusual.
And exactly the kind of manicure that changes depending on the lighting.
This is where autumn nails start becoming less about choosing a colour and more about playing with the finish.
Jelly Nails Aren't Finished Yet
Jelly nails were everywhere through 2026, and they're not disappearing simply because summer is ending.
Instead, the colours are changing.
Imagine the translucent jelly effect in cherry, amber, plum or brown.
You still get that glossy, almost glass-like depth, but with a much moodier palette underneath.
It's a good example of taking a summer trend and adapting it rather than immediately replacing it.
Cat-Eye Gets an Autumn Update
Cat-eye and velvet finishes make even more sense when the darker months arrive.
The magnetic effect creates movement through the colour, meaning deep shades don't appear completely flat.
Chocolate.
Burgundy.
Bronze.
Black cherry.
Deep green.
All of them can take on a completely different character with a velvet or cat-eye finish.
If you like dark nails but still want something interesting when they catch the light, this is probably the finish to try.
What About the Nude Girls?
You're safe.
Autumn isn't cancelling nude nails.
If anything, the continued movement towards clean, understated manicures means a beautifully finished neutral still works with everything.
Milky shades, soft beige, muted mauve and sheer natural finishes aren't disappearing.
The difference for autumn is that you can make them feel seasonal through shape, finish and small details rather than completely changing the colour.
A tiny metallic tip.
A deeper French.
A subtle brown detail.
Sometimes that's enough.
A Nail Technician's Take
Trends are useful for inspiration.
They're not rules.
One of the things I enjoy most about nails is taking something that's currently fashionable and adapting it to the person sitting in front of me.
Maybe you love black cherry but don't want ten dark nails.
Use it on a French tip.
Maybe you like chrome but full chrome feels too much.
Add a detail.
Maybe you're a nude client who has absolutely no intention of wearing olive green just because someone told you it's fashionable.
Stay nude.
The best manicure isn't necessarily the most fashionable one.
It's the one you actually enjoy looking at for the next few weeks.
